— TAX EFFECTIVE GIVING —
What if you could give more,
at no extra cost?
Through structuring your tax effectively, you could change lives globally.
At Mission Advisory, we are leading Christian accountants passionate about seeing an increase in giving across Australia. Our goal is to see every Christian in Australia giving to their maximum God-given potential.
We work with Christians nationwide to structure their giving for maximum impact & help them as their accountants on an ongoing basis. Watch the video below to learn how we help to legally structure your giving for maximum impact & effectiveness.
Imagine the impact
You’re passionate about using your resources for God’s Kingdom. And yet, many Christians give less than they could - not because their heart isn’t in it, but because of how their giving is structured.
Giving to churches and mission organisations through personal income is rarely tax-deductible, meaning less of your gift ends up maximising impact. But when you give through a discretionary trust, you can channel more of your income into the work you care about - legally and effectively.

Why it matters:
We are called as Christians to be wise stewards of God’s resources, by giving tax effectively it enables you to maximise your giving within a legally permitted structure.

The Government’s proposed 30% tax
on trusts
Recently the Government is seeking to impose a 30% tax on trust income. This would effectively reduce giving through trusts by at least 30%, having an estimated impact of reduced funding of up to $740mil each year to charities and not-for-profits, including churches and mission organisations.
Mission Advisory have been strongly advocating the Government for an exclusion for trust income given to charities and not-for-profits.
Thankfully the Government have listened and in the draft legislation have provided an exclusion so tax-free giving through trusts can continue.
This is not yet law and subject to debate in the Senate Committee. Keep watching this space.

A discretionary trust is a legal structure used to hold and manage assets—like property, shares, or business income—on behalf of a group of people (called beneficiaries).
The trustee (the person or company managing the trust) has the discretion to decide who receives income or capital from the trust, and how much each person receives, if anything.
The trust itself doesnt usually pay tax. Tax is paid by the beneficiaries.
When a church or mission organisation (that is exempt from income tax) is a beneficiary of the trust, no tax is paid on any trust income when the church/ mission organisation is made a beneficiary of the trust.

Potentially. To be able to give tax free to your church there are a few requirements. Firstly, your church needs to be an eligible beneficiary of the trust. We can assist by reviewing your deed to see if it is an eligible beneficiary. Secondly, the trust needs the church to be presently entitled to income of the trust, and that income needs to be paid to your church. Finally, your church needs to meet the requirement of being an income tax exempt entity. If you would like us to review the trust for eligibility on all of these & to assist you with your ongoing trust accounting requirements, please click on the link below to book a consultation with us.

Yes absolutely you can, and giving income from your investments directly from the trust is a great tax effective way to give, where eligible the franking credits received can be refunded to church which is an extra blessing. You should be mindful however that if you transfer existing investments into a trust that it may trigger a capital gains event to do so, careful consideration needs to be given before the investments are transferred in. As your accountant we can guide you on the tax considerations of this to see if it is beneficial to do. Please click on the link below to book a consultation with us.

Yes absolutely! We can help you establish the trust and contribute the monies into it so that investment earnings can be used to give to your chosen church or mission organisations. That is a great way to use resources & we’d love to help you with this!

Yes absolutely! We would love to be your accountants & help see you thrive financially & structure your giving so that it is maximised through tax effective giving. We service clients all across Australia ranging from individuals, to large family groups with complex structures.

Unfortunately this is not possible. Wages need to be paid to you & you pay tax on them in your personal tax rates. If however you have a business or investment income a trust could be suitable for you.
-
Trusts can be a great way to build wealth—they offer flexibility and can help with tax planning, protecting assets, and passing wealth to future generations.
However, if your property has a loan and the trust is making a loss after interest, a trust might not be the best fit.
We can help you choose the right structure for both your investments and your giving.

Our standard fee to setup a trust is $350 + GST, and some states have stamp duty that needs paying as well (notably $750 for NSW & $200 for Victoria). Our ongoing fees vary depending on the complexity of the trust & its business or investment income. A starting point for a trust is an annual cost of $1,500 + GST, this cost is to cover our services to ensure its income tax obligations are met & that the giving can be done tax effectively. Our fees are tax deductible, and by supporting our business that enables us to support more kingdom work also.

The ABN lookup tool available here enables you to search the tax status of your church. First search for your church or mission organisation in the search bar, and then click on the correct result ABN number. Then if you scroll down under “Charity tax concession status” you want to look to see if it has “Income Tax Exemption” status. If it is listed there, then your church or mission organisation can receive income distributed to it from eligible trusts tax free.
-
That’s great! We’d love to help you with that both now & on an ongoing basis. Please use our webform below to order a trust, our team will then establish it for you & send you the necessary paperwork to get started with it.
-
Yes, there are, and we can help you with this.
Firstly, it’s important that the trust deed allows distributions to your church/ chosen organisations.
These organisations need to be made “presently entitled” to income of the trust and the income needs to be paid. This is reviewed annually when preparing the financial statements for the trust.
Finally, your church needs to meet the requirement of being an income tax exempt entity.
If you would like us to review the trust for eligibility on all of these & to assist you with your ongoing trust accounting requirements, please click on the link below to book a consultation with us.
-
Yes, there are specific provisions in the tax legislation that recognise trusts give to organisations tax free.
These provisions provide specific requirements, notably that the trust income is actually paid, and is not a “paper entry.”
We want to support your generosity and stewardship by making sure everything is compliant.
